Kate Merrill, LPGA Apprentice
This will be Kate’s first year on the Toddy Brook team as she joins as our Head Golf and Teaching Professional! After 11 years of experience in golf instruction, operations, tournament directing and retail management, Kate brings her gained expertise right here to her original home!
Kate started to play golf in her Grandparents backyard right here in North Yarmouth at the age of 8. She learnt that her grandparents were moving right up the road and around the corner from a golf course. Toddy Brook Golf Course was beginning to take shape at the same time as Kate’s love for the game! In 2001, she joined Toddy Brook Golf Course and began on “the big course”.
At 12 years old, playing game shaping courses like Toddy Brook as well as competing with other junior girl golfers in MSGA Junior Tour events were highlights in her early years. More opportunities such as these built confidence in Kate as she went on to become a 3-time Toddy Brook Club Champion in 2004, 2005, and 2007, Junior’s Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier, as well as a student of the David Ledbetter Academy in Florida as well as a camper at Sugarloaf’s Nike Golf Camp in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.
As experience and momentum built, she began to work with Abby Spector, PGA, and went onto winning the Schoolgirl Championship in 2007, Fall Athlete of the Year, 2007-2008 Portland Press Herald Player of the Year as well as Runner-Up in both MSGA Women’s and Junior State championships.
In 2009, Kate concluded being a 4-year varsity team member and Senior year captain of the NYA’s Men’s Golf team and went to play her freshman year on Mount Holyoke College’s Women’s Varsity Team.
Kate absolutely loved all sports (playing both softball and basketball on a varsity level) but she continued to challenge herself to a higher level of competition by competing in the USGA Girl’s Junior qualifier at Winchester CC in MA, New England Women’s Amateur at Abenaqui Country Club, NH and Metacomet CC, RI. A passion she would return to and pursue after graduating colelge.
In 2013, Kate received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Religion from Mount Holyoke College. While pursuing her areas of study, she worked for 2 years at the Maine State Golf Association, as an USGA PJ Boatwright Intern assisting the Association’s Junior Tour program as well as being supporting staff for major championships around the state.
In 2015 she joined Tony Decker, PGA, at Purpoodock Club as an Assistant and began to pursue the PGA/PGM Apprenticeship Program while supporting the Club in all golf and tournament operations. This experience was the spark to Kate’s passion for a career in Golf and she went on to sharpen her skills in club operations as well as golf instruction by seizing the opportunity to work at the PGA Golf Club in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, winter of 2017.
While working as an Outside Operations Specialist, she began under the tutelage of Nancy Quarcelino, LPGA/PGA Professional, LPGA National Teacher of the Year, as well as a member of the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame. At that time, she passed her PAT test enabling her enroll and later be accepted into the LPGA Teaching Education Program.
In 2018, In efforts to focus on golf instruction, Kate joined Abby Spector, PGA, Golf Digest’s Maine Teacher of the Year in 2019-2020, Maine Golf and Sports Hall of Famer, as well as 7-time Women’s Maine State Amateur Champion at the Spector Golf Academy at Riverside Golf Course in Portland, Maine as a Lead Instructor.
Under Abby’s leadership in 2020, Kate began the LPGA Teaching Education Program while assisting the Spector Golf team in teaching over 150 adults through 5-week educational programs, mentoring 156 junior golfers through multi aged camp opportunities, as well as providing 300 hours of private golf instruction to golfers of all ages and ability levels.
